This is the illustration I created for the publication Smoke Signals that accompanied the film review of Hunt for Red October. Referencing the movie poster, the original composition was penciled on 9.5" x 11" drawing paper. I used assorted art markers to employ the stipple method (small dots) to create the detail, and filled in the rest with brush & ink. The picture was only going to fill a small area, so I employed a high contrast style (so that it held up on newsprint), and omitted the rest of the poster (and toupee). This was one of the four published illustrations I submitted in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s annual competition. The national competition included over 11,000 participants, and I placed first in the category of Art/Illustration: Portfolio of Work.
