This is the illustration I created of Darth Maul from Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Referencing a picture from a collectible magazine, I created the 11" x 14" illustration by lightly penciling in the details and drawing directly on top of it with colored art markers on drawing paper. Since black is technically not a color, but rather the absence of light (at least when projected), Darth Maul was a challenging subject for a colored medium. To maintain the detail in the black areas (without resorting to a faded or washed out look) I employed many levels of grey art markers. I lightly colored in the grey, and gradually darkened it in passes, so that the end result didn’t look like red face paint on a black silhouette.
